Why You Should Use HMRC’s Online Services – And How to Get Started
In today’s digital world, registering for HMRC / Government Gateway online services is no longer optional, it’s essential. But what exactly can you do, and how do you get set up? This video walks you through the answers.
Why sign up?
With Government Gateway (or HMRC online services), you gain access to your Business Tax Account, enabling you to manage Corporation Tax, Self Assessment, VAT, PAYE and more. You can file returns, view your liabilities, make payments, and even authorise third parties (such as your accountant) to act on your behalf.
🔐 How to register
First, head to HMRC’s service portal and create a Government Gateway account (if you don’t already have one). You’ll need details such as your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), National Insurance number (for individuals), business registration number (for companies), and your address. Once your login is created, enrol for specific tax services you need. Some services require HMRC to send an activation code by post before activation.
Adding Corporation Tax & Self Assessment
To add Corporation Tax, log into your business tax account, select “add a tax,” and enroll, providing your company’s UTR and registration number. HMRC will send an activation code via post which you’ll then enter online to activate the service.
For Self Assessment, similarly enrol through your account by selecting the Self Assessment service. Once enabled, you can manage individual or director tax returns.
Authorising an agent (accountant)
One of the powerful features is that you can authorise an accountant or agent to manage your tax affairs. Depending on the tax in question, you may use a “digital handshake” link, request an online authorisation, or use the form 64-8 to grant authority. Even once authorised, you remain legally responsible for your returns.
